Young Carers

At Dean Bank Primary School, we believe that all children and young people have the right to learn, enjoy and achieve, regardless of what is happening at home. When a young person looks after someone in their family who has a serious illness, disability or substance misuse problem, she/he may need a little extra support to help maximise their potential at school.

We have developed our Young Carers Group to show how we will support any pupil who helps to look after someone at home and to demonstrate how we will try to relieve some of the worries which young carers have about home and their school work.

Young Carers Group

The children in our school are very caring. In a recent questionnaire to identify any children who were ‘carers’ the majority of our children said that they ‘care’ for family members and do jobs etc. to help them. It was lovely to see that our children are so thoughtful and caring.

However, we understand that there are some children who have caring responsibilities at home. There are children who are looking after someone in their family who is ill, disabled, who has mental ill health or substance issues. This can often mean that, at times, Carers are isolated, unable to work or socialise, with no-one to help them or be a friend. This can also be true for Young Carers and the impact this can have on their lives can be challenging.

At Dean Bank, we work hard to provide a supportive environment where Young Carers are encouraged to come forward. We want the Young Carers in our school to be recognised and feel supported and to know they have someone to turn to if they need help. One way we support our Young Carers is through our Caring Kids Club. The club will be starting again after the Easter holidays on Thursday’s from 3:15pm to 4:15pm.

If you feel that you, your child or a child you know is in this situation then let Mrs Northcott or Mrs Temple know so we can help.

You can also contact Family Action, The Bridge Young Carers Service – 0191 383 2520 – who provide advice and support for Young Carers and their families.
